Schuylkill Haven business owner selected as Honorary Alumni

Albert L. Evans, Jr. was awarded the Honorary Alumni Award at a celebration held June 5 and 6 at the University Park campus of Penn State. The Penn State Alumni Association has granted the Honorary Alumni Award since 1973 to recognize individuals who, while not graduates of Penn State, have significantly worked toward bettering the University. Since the award was established, more than 100 individuals have been granted Honorary Alumni status.

Campus lauds alumni award winners

Penn State Schuylkill recognized four alumni for campus awards at their spring Schuylkill Alumni Society Awards dinner on April 24. Two alumni were selected for the Outstanding Young Alumni Award, which is intended to honor alumni 35 years or younger who are achieving success in their chosen field, and who are make admirable contributions within their communities. Aubrey L. Sejuit, '07 and Angel Zheng, '11 were selected for this prestigious award.

Senior Women's Softball player breaks record

On April 28, Penn State Schuylkill senior softball player, Jena Leffler, was named Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Student-Athlete of the Week. Leffler hit .412 (7-17) with three doubles and five RBI's. She also scored ten runs, drew five walks, and stole two bases. Leffler, a shortstop, became Penn State Schuylkill's All-time hits leader with 103 hits on April 26, 2015 versus Valley Forge University, breaking the record formerly held by Jessica Klotunowitch in 2008.

Students Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes

Almost fifty Penn State Schuylkill students participated in the annual Walk-a-Mile in her Shoes event, held in Pottsville, PA on April 23, where participants donned high heel shoes, and walked in them to raise awareness about sexual violence in the community.

Lithuanian Ambassador to visit Penn State Schuylkill

The Penn State Schuylkill community is pleased to announce that Congressman Matt Cartwright (PA-17) will be visiting our campus on April 27, and will be featuring special guest, Lithuanian Ambassador Žygimantas Pavilionis just prior to his return to Lithuania. Upon his arrival, University leadership will host a reception in the Ambassador's honor with invited guests Congressman Cartwright and Penn State Schuylkill faculty and honor students.

Students collect donations for homelessness programming

In November 2014, the Penn State Schuylkill Community Service Club held a "Box" event to bring awareness to the homelessness issue in our local area. On one of the coldest days of the year, students stayed outside on the campus mall walk for sixteen hours in donated boxes, where they were not allowed to eat or drink unless someone purchased it for them. They were also not permitted to use any type of technology.

Activities planned in celebration of Earth Day

Earth Day, a nationally recognized holiday that is celebrated each year on April 22, is a day to show support for environmental protection. Penn State Schuylkill and the campus EPICS Committee (Envision, Plan, Implement, Change, Sustain), have several free events planned throughout the day, and invite the campus and local community to attend.

Schuylkill faculty member selected for David M. Sokol Area Chairs Award

Harmut Heep, Ph.D., associate professor of German and comparative literature at Penn State Schuylkill, was selected as a 2015 recipient of the David M. Sokol Area Chairs Award. Dr. Heep will receive this prestigious award at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association (PCA/ACA) National Conference in New Orleans, LA, on April 1-4, 2015. The mission of the PCA/ACA is to promote the study of popular culture throughout the world through the establishment and promotion of conferences, publications, and discussion.
