Schuylkill students present research at event in Harrisburg

Three Penn State Schuylkill students presented two of eight total research posters representing Penn State at the prestigious Undergraduate Research at the Capitol – Pennsylvania event in Harrisburg on March 7.


Innovation showcased at Schuylkill Student Research and Scholarship Conference

Penn State Schuylkill students presented original research at the campus's biannual Student Research and Scholarship Conference on Nov. 30. Sixteen students from a variety of disciplines presented topics that ranged from a virtual reality experience to improve understanding of electric fields, to synthesis of chemical compounds to discover novel treatments for disease, and examination of important cultural and societal issues.

Thirteen Penn State Schuylkill students presented 20 research projects at the Eastern Communication Association's James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (ECA-USC) in April in Baltimore, Maryland.

This spring, 10 Penn State Schuylkill students had 11 projects accepted to the Eastern Communication Association's James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (ECA-USC). This year, Valerie Schrader, associate professor of communication arts and sciences, was also named an ECA Distinguished Teaching Fellow — a prestigious award limited to only 1% of the association’s membership.

Penn State Schuylkill hosted the 2022 Penn State Eastern Regional Undergraduate Research Symposium on Saturday, April 23. The event featured research from dozens of students across seven campuses: Penn State Abington, Brandywine, Hazleton, Lehigh Valley, Schuylkill, Scranton and York.

Sarah Princiotta, assistant professor of biology at Penn State Schuylkill, has recently returned from a trip to Sweden where she conducted research at a specialized facility to examine the role of aquatic microbes under ice.


Schuylkill students embrace discovery as Undergraduate Research Ambassadors

Penn State Schuylkill third-year corporate communication student Sophia Bates and fourth-year biology student Michael Russell have been serving in Penn State’s Undergraduate Research Ambassadors Program, designed to encourage undergraduate research and creative activity throughout the University. The pair are two of three students representing Penn State’s Commonwealth Campuses.

Sarah Princiotta, assistant professor of biology, and Lucas Redmond, assistant professor of biology, use robust summer fieldwork programs to develop original research and opportunities for undergraduate students to get hands-on experience.

Valerie Schrader, associate professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Schuylkill, and two of her undergraduate research students — Sophia Bates and Courtney Weikel — earned top paper honors at the National Communication Association fall conference.


Schuylkill chemistry professor creates novel compounds shown to manage parasites

Lee Silverberg, associate professor of chemistry at Penn State Schuylkill, has recently reported findings of research that examines the chemistry and bioactivity of some organic heterocycles containing sulfur and nitrogen. Through collaboration with biological scientists, these compounds have been shown to effectively inhibit the growth of disease-causing parasites in humans.


Bridging communication gaps in underserved communities

Through a chance meeting, Penn State Schuylkill biology student Melissa Ramirez and Schuylkill County VISION executive director Jeanne Elberfeld have joined forces to help deliver health information to an underserved community in northern Schuylkill County.
