Advising Tools

The following links are some of the numerous online resources available to help answer your questions or concerns regarding your academics.

Academic Calendars:
This is a useful resource for semester planning. Here, you will find critical academic deadlines, University holidays, final exam dates, and more.

Advising @ psu.edu:
This is your source for academic advising and academic information at Penn State.

LionPATH:
An interactive web-based service for students, faculty, and advisers that provides access to academic records (grades, transcripts, degree audits, class lists, advising rosters, etc.) and processes (final grade reporting, course registration, course drop/add, withdrawal, etc.).

Entrance to Major:
Penn State students not yet assigned a major must confirm their major in their fourth semester. Students are notified by email at the end of the fall semester to confirm their major on LionPATH early in the following spring semester. Confirming a major through LionPATH does not guarantee acceptance.

General Education:
A common set of requirements that all undergraduates must fulfill. Baccalaureate degree students must take a minimum of forty-five credits in seven different general education areas in order to graduate; associate degree students must take twenty-one credits in six areas.

iStudy:
The iStudy for Success modules provide an introduction to college-level learning, focusing on areas in which first-year students often need to build skills, such as study methods, time management, and communication. The modules help students prepare for the work that lies ahead of them, both academically and on the job.

Major Exploration:
All students must eventually choose a major, but Penn State allows ample time to explore and discover. Exploratory students who would like to gain a better understanding of what programs fit their personal interests and which campuses offer those programs can use the “Filters” feature in the Undergraduate Degree Bulletin. Filtering options allow sorting by Interest Area, Campus, and College to help examine and analyze all the possibilities.

Registration Timetables:
View when your first day to schedule is at any PSU campus for an upcoming semester.

Schedule of Courses:
Found in LionPATH, this resource allows you to view the schedule of courses at all Penn State campuses by semester. You can also use the advanced search to view specific categories such as general education areas.

Undergraduate Bulletin:
This bulletin is intended to serve as a basic tool in academic program planning: Students should become familiar with its information. The information in the bulletin covers three major areas.

General Information - The General Information section contains links that describe the University--its responsibilities for resident instruction, continuing education, and research; its policies regarding admission, tuition and charges, agencies and services, and student aid.

Colleges  - The college links give access to an outline of each college's and school's general requirements and the specific requirements for each major in that college or school. Information on ROTC programs and intercollege programs is also included in this information.

University Course Descriptions  - A brief description of each course offered by every academic unit is presented in this section. In consultation with an academic advisor, the student can use these descriptions to select courses for a semester schedule as well as to plan for course work to fulfill the General Education, general college graduation requirements, and specific major requirements.

University Undergraduate Advising Handbook:
The site provides user-friendly advising information regarding University-wide academic policies and procedures. It is intended to be used in conjunction with University, college, and department advising resources. Information, policies, and procedures have been cross-referenced with the relevant University sources. Although the handbook is designed for use at the University Park campus, most information is applicable at other Penn State locations.
