HAZLETON, Pa. — Students who earn an associate degree from Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) can directly transfer into bachelor’s programs at five eastern Penn State campuses, leaders of the institutions announced Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Penn State Hazleton.

Chancellors from the five campuses — Hazleton, Lehigh Valley, Schuylkill, Wilkes-Barre and Worthington Scranton — and the president of Luzerne County Community College met at Penn State Hazleton to sign an articulation agreement to facilitate the transfer of LCCC students into 11 baccalaureate degrees at the five Penn State campuses.

The agreement, which is effective immediately, will allow students to complete an associate degree at LCCC, then transition the majority of their credits into a baccalaureate degree program at one of those five Penn State campuses.

“We are excited to provide this opportunity to LCCC graduates to continue their education with Penn State,” Penn State Hazleton Chancellor Gary M. Lawler said. “LCCC students will be able to easily transfer their earned credits to a Penn State program, and we at Penn State look forward to serving as the next point in the higher education journey for those students.”

LCCC President Thomas P. Leary said, “A guaranteed transfer process with no loss of credits provides a clear path for graduates who want to continue their education and earn their bachelor’s degree. We’re pleased to establish this valuable partnership, which will benefit many college students in northeastern Pennsylvania.”

Penn State Hazleton Director of Academic Affairs Elizabeth Wright said, “Articulation agreements provide an important opportunity for students in our service area to make progress toward a degree. Thanks to these agreements, students now have the opportunity to study and to earn a degree at Luzerne County Community College even as they keep the eventual goal of earning a Penn State degree in mind. With these agreements, these students will know exactly what to take at Luzerne so that they are on track to make progress toward a degree when they arrive at Penn State.”

LCCC Vice President of Academic Affairs Cheryl Lesser said, “Providing pathways to baccalaureate degrees is a key component of supporting the aspirations of our students at LCCC. Students will be able to choose among a variety of majors that will lead them to their ultimate goal. We are very happy to partner with the Penn State campuses in this endeavor.”

Through the agreement, students who earn their associate degree will be provided an academic pathway to transfer into a related bachelor’s degree program at the five campuses. Academic advisers will work with students to ensure transferable coursework as part of the student’s overall academic plan. LCCC students can apply for transfer into four-year degree programs in administration of justice, biology, business, corporate communication, engineering, English, human development and family studies, information sciences and technology, rehabilitation and human services, science, or psychology. Not all degrees are offered at all locations. Students pursuing this agreement who are interested in other majors will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

When transferring to Penn State, LCCC students must apply for admission, submit required transcripts and meet Penn State’s admissions requirements. Penn State application fees will be waived for LCCC students who apply for baccalaureate programs.
