The Penn State Alumni Associations, Chapters, and Societies began to develop innovative new virtual programming in response to the pandemic. However, these virtual events have become a popular way to connect Penn State alumni no matter where they live. Below is a list of upcoming events, please check back often as new events are added.
Penn State Cooking Classic Season 2
The Penn State Cooking Classic returns for another season. This collaborative four-week cooking event is brought to you by Penn State Colleges and Campuses Alumni Societies, a proud partner of the Penn State Alumni Association. We invite you to join us Wednesdays at 7 p.m. for hour-long Southern cuisine recipes and thematic nightcaps during Cocktail Corner, as we tap into the talents across our Penn State community.
The Cooking Classic supports Lions Pantries across the Commonwealth, and attendees are encouraged, but not required, to make a gift in support of students facing food insecurity. Every $5 gift provides 20 or more meals—or may be used to help stock pantries with other basic need items like toiletries and paper products. Register online for one or all of the Cooking Classic webinars in the series.
On Wednesday, January 19, we will kick off the series with “Sweet Southern Comfort.” Keshia Davis '99 (Smeal) will share a family recipe for her Southern Sweet Potato Pie. Davis grew up in her aunt’s Philadelphia area bakery, Denise's Delicacies—a full-service bakery serving buttery pastries, pies, bread, and the most delicious donuts you have ever eaten. Our evening’s Cocktail Corner will feature Brandon Wagner ’09 (IST) of Big Springs Spirits.
Our Wednesday, January 26 session will feature southern-style appetizers during “Getting Pickled: Pickle-inspired foods with Bob McClure of McClure's Pickles.” Bob McClure ’01 (Arts & Architecture) owner of McClure's Pickles will prepare two appetizers, Battered Pickles with Aioli Dip and Dilly Cheese Balls. McClure will also host the evening's cocktail corner creating a Southern-themed Bloody Mary.
On Wednesday, February 2, “A Little Something on the Side,” will bring Southern appetizers to life. Alex Goodstein ’09 (IST), who is also known as food blogger @alexeatstoomuch, will walk us through the classic side dishes of collard greens and deviled eggs perfect for any Southern meal. Penn State Schuylkill alumnus Winn Allen '16, manager Brick House Grill, will mix up a cocktail for this evening’s Cocktail Corner.
On Wednesday, February 9, our season 2 series of Cooking Classic will wrap up with the main event that is “Anything but Medi-okra: Southern Creole Gumbo.” Join New Orleans native and Penn State alumna Dr. Jhan Doughty '94g, '01g (Education) who will tempt your tastebuds with his delicious and hearty seafood gumbo. Holla Spirits will spice things up in our final Cocktail Corner with a jalapeno vodka cocktail.
