The Penn State Schuylkill 80th Anniversary Speaker Series kicks off with their first featured guest, Richard L. "Dick" Yuengling, Jr., president and owner of D.G. Yuengling and Son, Inc., America's Oldest Brewery, on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the John E. Morgan Auditorium at Penn State Schuylkill.
Mr. Yuengling is fifth generation of a family brewing legacy that began in 1829 in Pottsville, PA. The Yuengling Brewery is still family-owned and operated today, having achieved a milestone 185th Anniversary in 2014. The company distributes beer in fifteen states along the east coast and produces a variety of year-round brands including Traditional Lager, Light Lager, Black & Tan, Lord Chesterfield Ale, Dark Brewed Porter, Premium and Light, as well as seasonal Bock and Oktoberfest beers.
Dick began working at the brewery in 1958 when he was a teenager. In 1973 he opted to satisfy his desire to test his own skills by purchasing a wholesale beer business in Pottsville. In 1985 Dick returned to the brewery and purchased the company from his ailing father. Since that time, Dick has managed to grow the business from 137,000 barrels of beer in 1985 to over 2.5 million barrels produced in 2013. He has achieved this success by building and leading a strong team of individuals within the organization and selecting a committed network of wholesalers to sell and distribute the product in the marketplace. Dick works six days a week at the brewery and is involved with all facets of the business.
