In November 2014, the Penn State Schuylkill Community Service Club held a "Box" event to bring awareness to the homelessness issue in our local area. On one of the coldest days of the year, students stayed outside on the campus mall walk for sixteen hours in donated boxes, where they were not allowed to eat or drink unless someone purchased it for them. They were also not permitted to use any type of technology.
During this event, and at additional fundraising events throughout the school year, the students collected funds to support and assist the homeless.
On Thursday, April 2, they presented Jeff Buchanan of Servants to All, with a check for $600 in support of their non-profit organization in Pottsville, PA. Their money will go towards the organization's program, My Father's House, which seeks to provide effective programs that allow for lasting resettlement for displaced individuals. The goal of the organization and their program is to break the cycle of repeat homelessness by helping them make positive life choices, and by building partnerships and deep foundations before building bridges to sustainable independence.
The Community Service Club will continue to assist Servants to All, and to participate in other fundraising events in support of reducing homelessness in our local area.
