Pathways to Success: Summer Start (PaSSS) Program

What is PaSSS?

The Pathway to Success: Summer Start (PaSSS) program is designed to help you make a successful transition to college life while also saving you money on tuition. Sign up for PaSSS to:

  • Earn credit hours towards your Penn State Schuylkill education, including two 3-credit classes, a math workshop and extra opportunities to prepare you for college success.

  • Receive a $2,000 scholarship toward the cost of the six credits you take as part of the program.

  • Work with an assigned peer academic coach who will set you up with the study skills you need to succeed.

  • Meet classmates before the fall semester to help you develop a group of friends in your new environment.

  • Kick off your college career in a more relaxed summer setting and take part in social activities tailored to PaSSS students.

  • Live on campus in our suite-style Nittany Apartments. 

  • Earn up to $1,000 working an on-campus job for departments including the library, athletics, admissions, and more.

When is the PaSSS program?

This six-week PaSSS program will take place from Tuesday, June 28, through Friday, August 12, 2022.

How can I participate?

The deadline to accept your invitation to participate in the PaSSS program was Friday, May 27, and this summer's program is full.

The PaSSS program is offered to select first- and second-year students by invitation only. If you would like to be considered for admission to the PaSSS program for next summer, please contact [email protected] or 570-385-6252.

Which classes will I take?

First-Year Seminar (PSU 008 - 3 Credits)
First-Year Seminar is a required course for all students. This course provides an introduction to college, and to the resources and people at Penn State Schuylkill, as well as strategies for success in the classroom.

The Craft of Comics (ENGL 193N - 3 Credits)
This course combines the literary analysis of comics and graphic novels with the creative practice of making comics. Students will learn through an integrated process of interpreting select comics texts, concepts and techniques while also completing creative work and exercises that complement those assigned texts, concepts, and techniques.

Math Workshop (non-credit)
This is an individualized math workshop working toward maximum math preparation for fall 2022.

Optional on-campus housing will be available in the Nittany Apartments at the cost of $1,470 for the duration of the program.

We recommend that you file a 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the PaSSS Program. Summer FAFSA recommended filing date is June 1, 2022. This is in addition to the FAFSA that you may have already filed for 2022-23. Visit studentaid.gov to complete FAFSA forms (PSU School Code: 003329).
